Duane Jarvis in hospice after cancer battle
04:59 PM PT, Mar 25 2009

Duane Jarvis, a longtime member of the L.A. roots/alt-country scene who has played with Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Dwight Yoakam, Dave Alvin and others as well as releasing several albums of his own, has entered hospice care following a 16-month fight with colon cancer.

“It’s been a tough fight, but Duane has faced it with tremendous grace, never losing his sense of humor or his positive outlook on life,” his brother Kevin wrote in a note sent to family members, friends and fans. “His music has kept him going, and us entertained. In the past five months alone Duane has endured two major surgeries, three rounds of chemo, numerous trips to the ER, and many weeks in the hospital.

“Unfortunately, Duane’s cancer has now reached terminal status and he will no longer be seeking curative treatment,” Kevin Jarvis wrote. “He has recently moved into an apartment near his beloved ocean in Marina Del Rey where he is under the care of loved ones and Providence TrinityCare Hospice.”

A fund has been established to help with the cost of the treatment and emergency room visits, as well as other expenses the musician has incurred. Donations may be sent to the Pray for Tomorrow Fund, 2554 Lincoln Blvd., No. 1010, Venice, CA 90291.

“The love surrounding Duane grows stronger with each contribution, good wish, prayer, song,” his brother added, “and Duane is grateful beyond words.”

Hidden Love provides medical relief for Peter Case

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 25, 2009

Santa Monica, CA--Friends, fans and fellow artists of singer-songwriter Peter Case have rallied toward his medical relief following the musician's unexpected open-heart surgery in January: They have established the Hidden Love Medical Relief Fund and Benefit Concert to cover the cost of his medical and related expenses.

Emergency open-heart surgery was not on Case's itinerary this winter: he had just begun a session of his popular songwriting class at McCabe's Guitar Shop and was preparing to celebrate his 25th Anniversary performing there in February. Following the show, he was set to leave for a tour of the U.K. and parts of Europe through mid-March. Instead, Case spent the winter successfully recovering at home from double bypass surgery. His doctors have declared him strong and stress that he will be back at work as soon as recovery is complete. However, until then, the question of the cost of his care remains unresolved. Case, a three-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer is among the 47 million+ Americans, many of them musicians, who are uninsured.

"Hidden Love was established because we care for Peter and for his work," says the fund's director, Arthur Shingler. "No one is going to profit from this venture. We simply feel that at the end of the day, we need to take care of each other." The money raised through the Hidden Love Medical Relief Fund will be applied to Case's expenses related to his hospitalization and post-surgery recovery.

Additionally, McCabe's is producing a Hidden Love Benefit Concert in the spring. Details will be forthcoming once the date and line-up are confirmed.
